Despite the fact that it's just about the most common Pokemon imaginable, Peridot is absolutely smitten with her rattata, and firmly convinced that she is a pokemon to be feared, regardless of her small size. Amethyst was the first pokemon that Peridot ever deliberately caught on her own (catching Mud was an accident), and so to go along with this momentous achievement, she named the plucky little rodent after someone important to her from back home. Her excuse for this is that it seemed fitting, anyway: The creature is purple, strong, and loves to nap and fight, and she found it hanging out in the garbage.
The downside to this meaningful nickname is that Peridot's very reluctant to evolve Amethyst. Though she likes to talk up the rattata's strength and her infinite potential as she already is, she's well aware that turning Amethyst into a raticate would make her a much more potent force on the battlefield... But she doesn't like the idea of letting go of what feels like the one link she has back to her home universe. Of course, this kind of sentimental attachment is rather unprecedented for the pragmatic gem, and thinking about how abnormal it is for her to feel so irrationally about something upsets and infuriates her. As such, it's best not to ask Peridot what her reasoning is for keeping the little purple rat in her basic stage.
