Well, what kind of oven are we talking about here? I haven't heard anything about this at all.

[Unsurprising, since she's been spending a lot of time shut up in her workshop.]

It's made to produce khyber crystals. They're the main component of lightsabers-- er, 'laser-swords'?

[peridork]

[That catches her interest.] Khyber crystals? So you're making gems? I've never heard of such a substance before, what are the raw components involved? How do you simulate the pressure required for the crystalization process with just an oven?

[Stop her before she gets too far ahead of herself]

I- think so, I don't know much about- the components are just some- through... [Okay, he can't keep up.]

[New tactic!]

Have you ever heard of the Force?

[peridork]

[What.]

Which one? Like, gravity? Inertia?

[t65]

[Mission successful, he slowed her down.]

The Force is the natural energy produced by all living things. Some beings are born with the ability to manipulate the Force. That's how I assert the necessary pressure on the crystals. Only people like me can make them.

[peridork]

[And again.]

Rrrrright. I've never heard of such a thing but maybe you can just demonstrate it to me, some time.

[Sounds like a bunch of basic science explained with a spiritual twist to her, but SURE. OKAY. She'll just have to take a look at this oven when he moves it upstairs or whatever.

[That's basically what it is, thanks George.]

[But anyway.]

What are dogs?

[peridork]

[Suspicious squint.] What? You're a human, how do you not know what a dog is--

[OFFENDED GASP.] Wait. Are you making fun of me? Did someone put you up to this!?

[t65]

What? What does being human have to do with it? [Squints back.] Why would I be making fun of you? [This isn't fun at all.]

[peridork]

[Okay that reaction alone instantly cools her down a bit, but she still looks suspicious.]

Dogs are little fluffy four-legged Earth creatures that are apparently popular pets among humans. Something I didn't know about before coming to this ship.

[t65]

[Luke frowns.] Oh, that would explain it. I've never been to Earth.

[Wait. He sounds a little annoyed-- not with her, but with the following concept:]

Are you one of those people who thinks Earth is where humans originated?

[peridork]

What? I don't think, I know. I'm pretty sure that's a fact, not a theory. At least it is in the universe that I come from.

[t65]

[Luke rolls his eyes.] Earth is a lost colony. Humans originated on Coruscant; the Coruscanti colonized thousands upon thousands of worlds, and some of them lost communication. It's pretty common, but I think Earth is so far off they haven't realized yet.

[peridork]

[Okay now she's actually laughing.] Um, okay, you're definitely off there. My people live for millions of years, and we've had eyes on Earth almost since that hunk of dirt was first formed. Humans are a recent development on the grand scale of the planet's lifespan, they've only existed for a few thousand years, and they definitely originated right there on Earth. It's well documented! Plus, we were going to colonize it once ourselves, and I'm pretty sure that if it had been claimed by some other race first, we would know about it.

[t65]

[Luke just lifts an eyebrow, smiling slightly. He's unimpressed by the laughter, but odly fond of Peridot's confidence. He raises his cybernetic right hand, wiggling the fingers.] Then you'll have to explain all the billions of worlds populated by humans that are more technologically advanced than Earth.

[Luke. Luke, stop being smug.]

But- how longlived are your species? I've never met someone like you before!

[peridork]

[She'd have gladly launched into an explanation about multi-verses if he hadn't just given her the perfect opportunity to brag about how great gems are. Now it's her turn to be smug.]

Oh, we're an ageless species. As long as our gems don't get damaged, [and she points to hers,] we can pretty much live forever.

[t65]

[Luke narrows his eyes, considering this.]

I'm guessing you're an inorganic species?

[peridork]

Yep. We're made, not born. It's a complicated process, but I was lucky enough to be involved in it back on Homeworld. You have the privilege of talking to a certified kindergartner.

[t65]

[Okay, you lost him.]

A what? Is that the name of your species?

[peridork]

What? No no, we're called Gems. A Kindergartner is a technician who specializes in growing more gems. That's what I am. Er. Was... for a while.

[Awkward cough.]

Anyway, that's why I'm really curious about these-- what did you call them again? "Khyber" crystals--? I've never heard of the substance before. I would like the opportunity to examine one some time, if you wouldn't mind.

[t65]

Oh. Well, that's easier to pronounce than 'Cybertronian'. [Mutter, mutter.]

Well, that's the thing. I haven't, uh, successfully made one yet. It's supposed to be a task to test your abilities. [Which is to say, it's hard, and no one understands.] I can show you some of my failed attempts.

[peridork]

[Well that's kind of disappointing. Peridot raises her eyebrows, but doesn't make any jabs about it.]

Hmm. Well as long as the raw materials are there, they should provide insight enough on their own.

[She takes a deep breath, finally coming to a decision:] Alright. You can move your oven, or whatever, into the armory, but there are some ground rules you need to know about first. First and foremost: this room is NOT open to the rest of the crew. Access is restricted, and I'll have to key you into the security system so you can let yourself in. It is IMPERATIVE that you understand that other crew members are permitted into the workshop by appointment. ONLY. If you leave the door open, we'll have every nutjob on the ship coming in and touching our equipment, or running off with dangerous materials and weapons, and frankly my stupid dog already steals enough without adding to that problem. Do you follow me so far?

[t65]

If you want, I'll let you see the f- oh, uh- [So many words.] Yes? Go ahead.

[peridork]

[Yeah sorry Luke once she starts lecturing its hard to stop.]

Good. The second thing you need to know is an elaboration on part of the first point, regarding my dog, Pointless. He lives in the armory and he also steals things constantly. I have, thus far, been unsuccessful in curbing this behavior, despite my reviewing of numerous dog training books and extensive research on canine obedience. You'll just have to learn to cope with it, like I have.
